Highland
The largest
region, with more distilleries than the rest of
the country combined, is Highland, probably the
quintessential Scottish whisky production area.
This is the land which lies to the north of the
Highland line and includes distilleries as far apart
as Inchmurrin in Dumbartonshire, Oban in Argyll,
Pulteney in Wick and Highland Park in Orkney.
As might be expected across such a wide area, generalisations
become less valid and sub-division becomes more
necessary. Geographical divisions of north,
south, east and west, together with special ones
Speyside and the islands, can be useful in illustrating
particular characteristics.
